A sports massage is a type of therapeutic massage designed to help athletes recover from injuries, improve their performance, and prevent future injuries. It uses various techniques to target specific muscle groups and tendons and can be tailored to meet the specific needs of individual athletes. The goal of a sports massage is to increase blood flow and flexibility, reduce muscle tension and soreness, and promote quicker recovery after physical activity.
Sports massage is primarily designed for athletes, both amateur and professional, as well as physically active individuals. It can be beneficial for anyone who engages in regular physical activity, such as running, cycling, weightlifting, or team sports, as well as individuals recovering from injury. However, it can also be used by people who simply want to relieve muscle tension or stress and improve overall relaxation.
The benefits of sports massage include:
Reduced muscle tension and soreness: Sports massage can help to relieve tight, achy muscles and reduce pain.
Improved flexibility and range of motion: By loosening tight muscles and improving circulation, sports massage can increase flexibility and range of motion.
Enhanced athletic performance: Sports massage can help to increase endurance, reduce the risk of injury, and improve athletic performance.
Faster recovery time: By increasing blood flow and reducing muscle tension, sports massage can help the body recover from intense physical activity more quickly.
Improved circulation: Sports massage promotes circulation and oxygenation of the muscles, helping to remove waste products and speed up recovery.
Reduced stress and anxiety: Sports massage can help to reduce stress and anxiety, promoting mental and emotional well-being.
Improved immune function: Sports massage can stimulate the immune system, helping to prevent illness and keep the body healthy.
The frequency of sports massage depends on your individual needs and goals. Here are some general guidelines:
Pre-event massage: An athlete may receive a sports massage 1-2 days before a competition to help improve performance and reduce the risk of injury.
Post-event massage: A sports massage within 24-48 hours after an event can help reduce muscle soreness and promote recovery.
Maintenance massage: For athletes who engage in regular physical activity, a sports massage once a month can help maintain muscle function and prevent injury.
Recovery from injury: If you are recovering from an injury, your therapist may recommend a series of sports massages to help speed up recovery.
It's important to note that these are just general guidelines and your needs may vary based on the type of sport you participate in, the intensity of your training, and your personal goals. Your massage therapist can help you determine the best schedule for your needs. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
For sports massage and sports therapy, its advisable to wear shorts and a vest (for ladies) to your appointment. This means you can move around comfortably and I can get a good look at your posture while standing or moving. You can change during your appointment if needed.
Some people are under the illusion that sports massage must hurt in order to be effective, but this really isn’t the truth. It’s fair to say that there may be some discomfort during your sessions – particularly in any areas of your body that have been holding on to tension. But it should NOT be solely a painful experience.
Similarly, it is not uncommon to have some mild bruising after a sports massage, especially if we have particularly troublesome areas that require deep work. Its is NOT however, normal to always be left with bruising throughout the body as a result of sports (or any) massage. We are not in the business of torture – bruising is a sign of trauma within the body. As therapists, our job is to help your body to heal and recover to its optimal function. If your therapist is of the mind that pain and bruising are signs of a good treatment, it may be time to move on!
